In this IFLR podcast we speak to Anna Wu, the founding chair of the Hong Kong Competition Commission and recipient of this year’s IFLR Asia-Pacific Market Reform Award.
Wu served as Commission chair for seven years from May 2013 to April 2020. She has been a pioneering advocate for fair competition in the marketplace since the 1990s and was the principal driving force behind the establishment, development and consolidation of a competition framework in Hong Kong. Among the many milestones under her leadership, the Commission brought six cartel cases to court and published three decisions regarding applications for a block exemption order.
The establishment of the Commission was a landmark development in Hong Kong’s traditionally laissez-faire market.
Over her career, Wu has also been dedicated to public service, including serving as a member of the Executive Council of the HKSAR Government for more than eight years. She has vast experience in promoting and developing legal reform across areas such as equal opportunities, consumer protection and corruption.
In this podcast, Wu discusses some of the highs and lows of establishing the Commission and the challenges that competition authorities in the region are now facing. She also talks about her ambitions and next moves, and encourages young lawyers to persevere with law as a vehicle for change.
