2021 was an exciting year for the trade finance bank, whose in-house legal team picked up an award thanks to its support of complex cross-border trade initiatives across the continent.

With a mission statement committing the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) to expanding, diversifying and developing African trade, while simultaneously operating as a socially responsible financial institution, the in-house legal team at Afreximbank is certainly kept busy. The team comprises a group of specialists that allow the Bank to navigate tricky legal and regulatory challenges, whilst also providing the support it needs to fulfil such an ambitious agenda.

The team's work providing counsel on Afreximbank's innovative, extensive and complex deal activity saw IFLR's awards research team award it the In-house team of the year honour at the IFLR Africa Awards 2021.

IFLR's editor of awards research Jamie Rayat spoke to Afreximbank's director of legal services Samallie Kiyingi, who discusses her team's culture and ways of working, as well as just some of the impactful, innovative and complex cross-border projects that took place during the awards review period.
